On Thursday, April 12, the team set their hopes high of beating conference rival Batesville. At #1 Singles, Lilli Stewart kept the pressure on her opponent and never gave her any breathing room. She came out with a 6-2, 6-2 victory. The next match to conclude came at the #2 doubles position. After finding themselves down 2-5 in the first set, Maggie Brack and Taylor McCreary battled back to win five straight games and win the set 7-5. The duo carried that momentum to the second set as well and got the hard fought 6-4 second set victory. Shortly following, the #1 doubles team of Katarina Sacksteder and Grace Moster fell to their opponent 4-6, 5-7. They continued to keep the match close and battle back but were never able to get over the hump. With the score 2-1 in favor of the Wildcats, all the pressure were on the #2 and #3 singles players. After winning the first set 6-2, Lauren Klei had her confidence building as she took a 5-2 lead in the second set. The Batesville foe would not go down easy as she battled back to make it 5-4 in Klei’s favor. The players battled back and forth but finally Klei prevailed and won the set 6-4 to clinch the team win for the Cats. As for the #2 Singles, Megan Routh had split two long and tiresome sets with her opponent 3-6, 7-6(4). After finding herself down 2-5 in the third set, and with the team win already decided, she was able to play her game to take the lead at 6-5. In the end, Megan lost in a devastating tiebreaker 5-7 to lost the 3rd set and the match. When asked about the match, Coach Siebert commented the following,” This was a great mid season challenge for the team heading into the main stretch of the schedule. I was extremely proud of all of my players even if they didn’t pick up wins. Any of the matches could have gone either way and tonight they just happened to be going our way. It has been awhile since we had beaten Batesville as a team. We needed every win tonight of course as the score was 3-2. Overall it was a great match and hopefully we can carry that momentum into the rest of our upcoming matches.”
